The internet and its technology however, continue to have profound effect in promoting the sharing of information thereby making possible, rapid transactions among businesses and supporting global collaboration among individuals and organizations.
Business on the Internet was limited mainly to large companies and their suppliers, who connected their computers together to speed up ordering and payment systems. Today, hundreds of millions of people are involved in commerce on the Internet – when for example, they visit the World Wide Web to buy or search for new products and better services.
Indeed, the Internet has reduced the world to the size of a village, and presents vast avenues for rapid business development such that a business not leveraging on this great opportunity for mass selling is in danger of loosing its customers to those who are.
A corporate website hosted on the Internet is indeed, the cheapest and most efficient means through which organizations and individuals can communicate and market their products and services to a global audience. It is also a dependable outward oriented business strategy which provides numerous export opportunities and avenues for SMEs to participate in production chains with large producers abroad.
If SMEs in Nigeria, who have to date, largely confined thier activities to catering for the domestic market place, can emulate their foriegn counterparts and embrace the internet opportunity, I see them capturing a share of the outsourcing market that is now dominated by countries like India, and contributing more meaningfully to the development of the Nigerian economy.
